outdoor industry offers several varieties of the camping lantern.

· Gas lanterns offer long-lasting light. Several different
gas types of lanterns are available: propane, butane and unleaded
gasoline are among the most common. Out of these different fuel types,
propane is the most popular because of its convenience and price.
Gas lanterns are noisy, but they give the option on an adjustable
flame. Gas lanterns are the most expensive to operate.
· Battery lanterns are the safest camping lantern. Some models
use rechargeable batteries. Battery lanterns are the only safe camping
lanterns to use inside a tent or other enclosed space. Battery lanterns
do not work well in cold or freezing temperatures.
· LED lanterns are a subset of battery-operated lanterns. They
offer up to 20 hours of bright light on 4 “D” size batteries.
· Solar lanterns are another subset of the battery-operated
lanterns. The solar option harnesses energy from the sun and utilizes
smaller or rechargeable batteries. Solar lanterns also offer combination
features such as a lantern and AM/FM radio combination.
· Candle lanterns are an environmentally-friendly lantern requiring
no batteries or gas. Long lasting candles can burn up to 9 hours.
These do require matches.
· Shake, Crank or Wind Lanterns are great in emergencies. They
do not need
batteries or gas. These lanterns need to be shaken, wound or cranked
for them
to light up. They do not stay lit as long as the other varieties of
lantern. Lit
time varies with each model. These lanterns have long lasting LED
bulbs.
Before you purchase your camping lantern consider the different models
according to your camping needs. How long will you need the lantern
to stay lit? Will you be carrying the lantern in a backpack or are
